Gulhi — the Maldives, unfiltered
A small local island in the South Malé Atoll, halfway between the airport and the open ocean's best diving.
The island
Gulhi is one of the smallest inhabited islands in the South Malé Atoll — barely 400 metres long, home to around 800 people, and one of the quietest islands in the whole Malé Atoll. That's exactly why we're here. Instead of the bustle of Maafushi or the resort conveyor belt, you'll find sandy lanes, a working harbour, friendly faces, fresh local food, and a pace that resets you within a day.
It's close enough to be easy and far enough to feel like an escape: roughly 20 km south of Malé, about a 30-minute speedboat transfer from Velana International Airport, with the public ferry running most days (not Fridays).
Above the water
- North End "Bikini Beach" — soft white sand, swimwear-friendly, a gentle slope into clear turquoise water; perfect for sunset after the last dive.
- Authentic island life — small cafés and guesthouses, island hospitality, the rhythm of a real Maldivian fishing community.
- Easy day trips — sandbanks, snorkelling, fishing and dolphin cruises, all arranged locally.
- Unbeatable value — local-island prices, not resort prices, for the same ocean.
Why divers choose a local island
Diving from Gulhi means skipping long resort crossings and crowded group boats. Our sites are 5–45 minutes away by our own doni, the atoll wraps around us with reefs, walls, thilas and channels in every direction, and after the dive you step back into island life rather than a sealed resort. More water time, smaller crowds, lower cost, and a real sense of place.
